Inspiration vs Intimidation

You have probably heard people talk about how much they fear their boss at work.

What they really fear in most cases is the power to terminate employment. Such is the leverage that the boss or manager has in their arsenal.

Unfortunately in the South African Employment Relations Space, the Employee loses everything whilst going through CCMA and Labour Court.

Such assets as cars, houses, insurance policies and other financial commitments come to a halt during this periods.

I have often heard managers who believe in dictatorship say that "by the time you win your case at ccma or labour court, you will have lost everything"

Some pointers on Fear vs Vision:
1) Fear is a product of intimidation, Vision comes from Inspiration

2) Managers who intimidate you are coming from a deep sense hurt, humiliation and inadequacy.

3) Dictatorship is taught, it is not automatic and your boss was not born with it.

4) Someone is mentoring your boss, dont forget that, your boss actually looks up to someone. It is highly probable that your boss's mentor believes in dictatorship as well.

5) You better believe this, anyone who is brilliant at their work, has a position at work, and is intimidating the team, is creating a "Fear Culture"

6) Fear culture is based on followership

7) Faith in people culture is based transformational leadership

Leadership is Not the Position of Leadership It seems so simple, yet to many a leader it is not.  The Leadership Space or Position of Authority, is not Leadership. Put in other way, Leadership is not the Position, but the Person's attitude towards the position that they occupy. Leadership is the mindset, yes, the mindset and not the authority-set.  Leadership is not the tools of authority nor the vicinity of power. Making conversation with the powers that be, and actually executing their wishes and whims, is not leadership. It is exactly that, executing the mandate of the powers that be. Leadership is a nuance, it is not obvious to the casual observer.  It is concerned with the future, by inspiring the present, using lessons from the past. I challenge you to consult a book called The Art and Science of Leadership by Umbusi Ziqalo, and begin a journey of unlearning, so that you can learn true leadership.
