Hi, my name is Umbusi, which in IsiZulu language, means The King or The Sovereign.
The study of leadership and the lives of leaders, past and present, is my passion.

I have been studying and observing leaders for the last 16 years of my life, and when I boil down leadership to its core, removing all the frills and extras,
• I cannot but find one thread of the centrality of leadership, and that is
• Leadership is Central to every undertaking and project
• The Leader, in other words the individual man or woman, with whom the buck of responsibility stops
A Leader is:

  • The one who puts up the hand and wants to be counted

True Leadership Responsibility, is a School of Thought
• There are many philosophies out there about “responsibility”, about who should take the ultimate responsibility when the area of responsibility is managed and lead in an excellent way, or worse, when it’s mismanaged and not lead properly
• There is a social school of thought that believes in collectivism, the idea that no one person can be endowed with the sole responsibility.

It is associated with communism, and the idea is that people should prioritize the good of the society over the welfare of the individual.
• This school of thought generally accepts responsibility, whether its reward or punishment, for the actions of the individual who is considered an important member of the tribe or group.
The emphasis is cohesiveness among the members of the group, and the group is prioritized over the individual.

  • The Art of Leadership is the personal transformation from the deep insights into what works in your leadership, in other words, what makes people follow and work willingly towards your vision, ...


  • and ... the striking realizations about what doesn’t work (the stuff of the vision that your people do not want to do willingly).

Umbusi's Blog 20 of 2019| The Myth of Position in Leadership

Leadership is Not the Position of Leadership It seems so simple, yet to many a leader it is not.  The Leadership Space or Position of Authority, is not Leadership. Put in other way, Leadership is not the Position, but the Person's attitude towards the position that they occupy. Leadership is the mindset, yes, the mindset and not the authority-set.  Leadership is not the tools of authority nor the vicinity of power. Making conversation with the powers that be, and actually executing their wishes and whims, is not leadership. It is exactly that, executing the mandate of the powers that be. Leadership is a nuance, it is not obvious to the casual observer.  It is concerned with the future, by inspiring the present, using lessons from the past. I challenge you to consult a book called The Art and Science of Leadership by Umbusi Ziqalo, and begin a journey of unlearning, so that you can learn true leadership.

You are what you settle for. It is not an accident where you find yourself in life. You are where you settled to be, consciously or otherwise.
