The Leadership Determinant: Identity
“We view ourselves, others, and the
world at large, as we view ourselves”
Identity
is basically Your self-image and is
the light through which you view yourself, others and the world at large. Now imagine for a moment, if that light was
dim, lacking enough strength and brilliance.
It
would mean that the light you are using is dim and not effective in showing you
everything you needed to see, discover and work-on in your life.
When
the light in a room or environment is not enough, it becomes difficult even to
perform simple tasks and look for objects that are hidden.
It
is the same with self-image, if your self-identity is dim and not so important,
that is how you will tend to see yourself, and your life-programme, as well as
the significance of others will be greatly diminished in your considered or not
so considered viewpoint.
Here are some important points about
Identity;
- Your potential is forever at the
mercy, of the quality of your self-identity.
- The weaker you’re self-view, the
weaker will be your confidence, your assertiveness, and
self-acceptance.
- You will also tend to see less
value in others, simply because human beings see others as they see
themselves.
- Your attitude towards others has
nothing to do with them necessarily, but has to do more with how you see yourself.
- The stronger however your
self-identity, the more confidence you will have, you will be more
assertive and self-assured.
- You will also invoke confidence
and self-assurance in others, because you will be treating then with
respect, congruence, and trust.
- At the heart of low confidence,
it an identity crisis, an identity which has not been defined, nurtured
and coached into maturity and usefulness.
- Some people grow up, while others
become matured.
- It is not a-given that physical
growth, education, procreation and work experience, equates maturity.
- Maturity is a choice, and is
born out of concerted efforts at self-mastery and personal
discipline.
- It is not automatic, it must be
sought, discovered and coached, trained and maintained into a habit and
embedded into one’s character.
- Physical growth and other events
that are automatically timed by life and biology, are exactly that, timed
events that have nothing to do with choice.
